The Kenya Study Abroad Program is premised on cultural immersion and experiential learning of Kenya. The program integrates formal coursework such as
- Introduction to Swahili
- Introduction to Africana Studies
- African Politics
- Comparative Global Societies
- Sociology of Black Communities
- Introduction to Black Liberation and Religion
by studying Kenya’s urban and rural lifestyles. Further, this project allows students to conduct independent studies exploring the diversity of communities in Kenya.The key components revolve around
- Linguistic and Cultural Aspects (Swahili at the center)
- geographic/geologic features (The Great Rift Valley)
- Kenya’s Environment, Poverty Alleviation and Economic Development (The Greenbelt Movement)
- The Rural Livelihoods Field Component
- Kenya Political Systems
- Urban Study
- Maasai Mara Field Study on Human Dimensions of Wildlife Conservation
- Horticultural Farming in Kenya
- Independent Study based on a student’s or departmental interests.
