Basic SwahiliThis course is designed for beginning students who have little or no previous knowledge of Swahili. The course focuses on development of language competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing through a COMMUNICATIVE approach in teaching. The course familiarizes the learner with the cultures and sub-cultures of the Swahili speaking Africa (with primary focus of Kenya and/or Tanzania). This course will help the student understand how Swahili speakers describe themselves, interact with others and comprehend time and space. The student will gain a sense of how American and Swahili speaking cultures differ as well as what connects them. Discussions of current affairs and important issues in the Swahili speaking world will be a regular feature.
