African American Literature I

This course is a survey of early African American literature. We will read poetry, folktales, oratory, essays, narratives, and fiction from the mid-eighteenth century to the early twentieth, focusing on questions of slavery and freedom, and of racial, gender and national identity. Grades will be based on participation in class discussion, reading quizzes, short writing assignments and a final exam.
